He is risen!

Light overwhelms the darkness.  Hope conquers despair.  Life has the final world over death.

He is risen.

Shortest Day

Today is the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year.  You've probably heard by now about the conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter, which should be quite a sight.  Of course, this being 2020, the sky will probably be overcast obscuring this celestial event. But rather than be pessimistic, I will indulge in some optimism, some hope, that we will be able to see what has been dubbed "The Christmas Star" - even though Christmas isn't until the 25th and Jesus was likely born in March.  Still, it's the thought that counts, right?  Advent is all about hopeful anticipation, and we're coming to its glorious conclusion. I choose to welcome Christ with an open heart.  What about you?  Will you join me?  Will you look heavenward, confident that, clouds or no clouds, Our Lord is coming to be with us?

Gray Skies and Rain

The weather seems apt for Good Friday, at least here in the Upper Valley.  The skies are gray and drizzle falls from the sky. It is, in all, a depressing tableau. It is on this day that death seemed to prevail, when Jesus was mocked, tortured, abandoned, crucified.  We've all seen pictures of Christ on the cross but how many of us have ever experienced that level of pain, of desolation?  How many of us have had a role in doing someone down? This is the moment we recognize just how cruel, how violent, how destructive humanity can be.  On Sunday we will celebrate Easter, when we learn that Good Friday was not the end of the story.  But lest we fall prey to the dark temptations that entice us, let us meditate on what transpired on Golgotha.  Let us gather at the foot of the cross and see what men and women can do. Running Late

How is it only 9:47 am and I already feel like I've fallen way behind schedule?  If you're like me, you've had days like this.  Maybe you're having one like it just now.  Such times call for triage, the ruthless management of one's schedule to get back on track, to make a semblance of progress before the sun sets.  Alternatively, there is the wisdom offered long ago by a former colleague: "There's nothing you can do today that you can't put off until tomorrow."  Now, you might say, aren't these both ways of choosing to do some things and not others?  You'd be right, of course.  But these are two very different ways of looking at things, of setting priorities.  The first approach is hurried, hastened, and operates from a position of scarcity - we don't have enough time!  The second approach is more relaxed, measured, and is rooted in a position of abundance - we have not only today but tomorrow to do what needs to be done; w...
