Monday, Monday

Another Monday, another work week. Meetings to attend, emails and phone calls to make or return, things to catch up on, the inevitable unwanted surprise.  It's enough to make one want to climb right back into bed and just stay put.  On Monday mornings, avoidance can be ever so enticing.

Avoidance as a strategy can have similar appeal during Lent.  Who wants to look at their sins, their failings, their straying from God?  Who wants to spend time figuring out how to set things right?  Who wants to amend behavior?  Staying where we are has its attractions.  But it also has its limits.  We miss out on new possibilities.  We discover that ignored problems and shortcomings will find new ways of manifesting themselves.  What we think of as a safe haven can quickly become a prison.

Through its structure, its liturgies, its Scripture lessons, and its rituals, Lent creates a safe space for us to engage with God, and to prepare ourselves for his new creation, which will break out on Easter.  So let's throw back the covers, get out of bed, and start our day.
