Witness
Witness
When
we hear the word 'witness' we most likely think of someone who has seen
something, perhaps a crime being committed. The witness is in all
likelihood a passive observer. That's true as far as it goes - but the
meaning of this word can go so much further. Think of John the Baptist.
We
will meet this austere figure once again this Sunday and what stands
out about him is that he testifies to the one who is coming. He
witnesses to the pending arrival of Christ. Here, being a witness
doesn't so much involve seeing something but telling others about
something that has happened, or will happen.
